Vietnam has reached an important milestone in the development of its aluminum industry with the successful production of domestically smelted primary aluminum for the first time. The achievement completes the country’s bauxite–alumina–aluminum production chain and opens new opportunities for downstream industries including aluminum billet, extrusion, forging, rolling, casting and precision manufacturing.

A Historic Milestone for Vietnam’s Aluminum Industry

On July 26, 2026, Vietnam officially unveiled its first domestically produced aluminum ingots at the Dak Nong Aluminum Electrolysis Plant in Nhan Co Industrial Park, Lam Dong Province.

After more than 11 years of investment and construction, the facility successfully produced aluminum ingots with a purity of 99.71%, becoming the first plant in Vietnam to complete the production chain from bauxite mining and alumina refining to aluminum electrolysis.

Production Capacity Expected to Reach 450,000 Tons per Year

The first phase of the Dak Nong Aluminum Electrolysis Plant has an annual production capacity of approximately 150,000 tons.

Production capacity is expected to increase to approximately:

150,000 tons/year – Phase 1
300,000 tons/year – targeted by the end of 2026
450,000 tons/year – designed capacity targeted for Q1 2027

At full capacity, the plant is expected to generate approximately VND 35–36 trillion in annual production value and could help Vietnam reduce aluminum imports by an estimated US$1.5 billion per year.
